HEART OF DEVON CODE OF ENVIRONMENTAL CARE
We
are all stewards of our environment, holding it in trust for
generations to come. As members of the Heart of Devon Farm and Country
Holiday Group, we endeavour to minimse our negative impact on the world
and improve our current situation, so that we do indeed have a
sustainable future. We are committed to the following set of
principles, which we trust you will agree are worthwhile. You may find
that your hosts will far exceed these basic guidelines. We hope that
your Devon holiday will help us achieve some of these goals.
1 . We aim to conserve and improve the beautiful Devon
landscape which is one of the jewels of the English countryside. Where
possible, we encourage our visitors to walk our land and observe the
wildlife and natural vegetation. Hedgerow and grazing management, tree
planting and our bird feeders are all examples of how Devon farming and
environmental awareness mesh together. 2. Bed and breakfast members take pride in the quality of food
that we offer. This means locally sourced meat, fish, poultry, game,
fruit and vegetables wherever possible. In some cases the traceability
is immediate, and the food-miles zero, as your hosts themselves will be
the producers! Local Farmers' Markets (dates and venues from
www.devonfoodlinks.org.uk/ Events /Farmers Markets) are good sources of
supply for self-catering guests, or for speciality food to take home.
3.
Biodegradeable cleaners are used wherever practical, as are Fairtrade
products. This ensures that not only do we pollute less, but that
farmers in other parts of the world, for example where tea and coffee
are grown, get a fair deal too.
4. Low energy light bulbs are used where appropriate.
5. All newly purchased white goods will be A or B energy rated.
6. Wherever possible, thermostats and timers are utilised to control energy use.
7.
According to each member's circumstances, we aim to sort recyclable
waste into paper, glass, plastic and cans for disposal at a local
centre. Printer cartridges are recycled for charity
8. Green waste is composted.
9. Water from collecting butts is used for watering pots, tubs and garden plants.
10.
If you would like to see our beautiful area at a slower pace, we are
happy to supply you with walking/ riding information, bus timetables,
and provide storage for your bicycles.
